Procurement of Eco-innovative Food Containers and associated Services

Réseau des acheteurs hospitaliers d’Ile-de-France, the network for hospital procurers in the Paris region, is a member of INNOCAT’s core buyers group.

French hospitals use on average a year 5 tons of plastic containers to store, reheat and preserve the food served to patients, residents, visitors and hospital staff. Currently in France, these disposable food containers are neither reused nor recycled.

Resah is looking for innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of such consumption, within the budgetary constraints of healthcare organisations.

This was the first procurement to be successfully completed within the INNOCAT project, with the two tenders awarded to three suppliers in April 2015. The tender was awarded in the form of a framework contract, so interested hospitals in France are able to take advantage of the agreement.

What exactly have Resah procured?

The first tender consisted of two lots: recyclable food containers including the recycling service, and biodegradable dishes.

Following a period of quality testing to ensure the proposed solutions met the required EN13432 standard, the two lots were awarded respectively to the manufacturers Rescaset and FIRPLAST.

The second tender, for a consulting service to reorganise the logistics of sorting organic from non-organic waste, was awarded to the agricultural and food company Saria.

What were the results?

The results of this procurement process were published in the last INNOCAT newsletter.
